Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music
 
The Bachelor of Arts in General Music

The Bachelor of Music program is a two-year degree based on the Conservatory Model. It consists of The SMS followed by four semesters of dedicated music study and practice. It is made up of all of all of the Core Requirements plus two units of Electives per semester. The Bachelor of Arts degree is a professional degree designed to provide the student with all of the foundational knowledge and skills necessary for life-long musical development. The Bachelor of Arts is a General Music Degree

The Bachelor of Arts in General Music consist of 70 units of music study

Year One

Semester 1

The Summer Intensive

The first semester of all degree programs is the Summer Intensive Music Seminar (SMS). It is a five-week, extreme introduction to musical arts. The SMS is designed to provide a firm foundation upon which to build an enduring edifice of musical knowledge and skills.

SMS serves as the first semester of any degree program. Students must maintain a C grade or higher in all subjects in order to qualify for entrance into the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Music degree programs.

Piano Proficiency Requirements

Basic piano proficiency skills are required of all music majors for graduation. Students can prepare for this requirement by enrolling in Class Piano each semester in residence until the student has passed the proficiency examination. Students must receive a grade of ā€œCā€ or higher in Class Piano to continue on to the next level. Students are required to pass the piano proficiency exam in order to graduate. The sections of the piano proficiency exam may be taken at one time or in sections.

Students who have not demonstrated proficiency are required to enroll in Class Piano until proficiency is achieved. Information regarding the examination is available from the Music Department or Proficiency Coordinator. Music majors with a piano performance medium must pass a proficiency examination in functional skills prior to registering for upper division Applied Piano. Upper division transfer students with a piano performance medium must pass the examination by the end of their first semester in residence.

Music Theory and Music History Comprehensive Exams

All degree students are required to pass a comprehensive exams covering the content of MC 181-282 Music History I, II, III, IV and V, MC 141- 242 Written Theory I, II, III, IV, and V, and MC 145-242 Aural Theory I, II, III, IV, and V
