Bachelor of Music Degree
 

The Bachelor of Music program is a three-year degree based on the Conservatory Model. It consists of The SMS followed by six semesters of dedicated music study and practice. It is made up of all of all of the Core Requirements plus an area of emphasis of the student’s choice. The Bachelor of Music degree is a professional degree designed to produce professional musicians and music teachers. There are three areas of emphasis available: Church Music Leadership, Music Education, or Vocal Performance.

Students must show proficiency in Written and Aural Theory I prior to enrolling in Theory II (MC 142).

All music majors must select one performance medium for an applied area of specialty (piano, voice, string, wind, brass, percussion, or guitar). Participation and earning credit in department recitals during the semester and performance before a jury at the end of the semester are required in each applied Music course. Music Education and Music Ministry emphases require seven consecutive semesters of study in the same performance medium. Vocal Performance emphasis is subject to its stated applied music requirements.

Vocal Performance Emphasis 17 units

Students may apply for admission to the Performance Emphasis during their second semester of applied music instruction. In this emphasis, seven consecutive semesters of study in one performance medium are required. (Three consecutive semesters at 30-minutes and four consecutive semesters at 60-minute lessons.)

Piano Proficiency Requirements

Basic piano proficiency skills are required of all music majors for graduation. Students can prepare for this requirement by enrolling in Class Piano each semester in residence until the student has passed the proficiency examination. Students must receive a grade of ā€œCā€ or higher in Class Piano to continue on to the next level. Students are required to pass the piano proficiency exam in order to graduate. The sections of the piano proficiency exam may be taken at one time or in sections.

Students who have not demonstrated proficiency are required to enroll in Class Piano until proficiency is achieved. Information regarding the examination is available from the Music Department or Proficiency Coordinator. Music majors with a piano performance medium must pass a proficiency examination in functional skills prior to registering for upper division Applied Piano. Upper division transfer students with a piano performance medium must pass the examination by the end of their first semester in residence.

Music Theory and Music History Comprehensive Exams

All degree students are required to pass a comprehensive exams covering the content of MC 181-282 Music History I, II, III, IV and V, MC 141- 242 Written Theory I, II, III, IV, and V, and MC 145-242 Aural Theory I, II, III, IV, and V. Bachelor of Music students have an additional exam covering the content of MC 341 Counterpoint, MC 342 Twentieth Century Music Theory, and MC 343 Orchestration.
